SISTAS IN NEED

It’s now the holiday season and I don’t have a man to spend it with. I’m tired of feeling disappointed and thinking every man is no good. Nakia isn’t helping out with her disgusted attitude about men. I thought that if I said something bad, then she’d counter by telling me the positive side. Boy, was I wrong. Now all she does is agree with me and then says something even worse about men.

My response would always end up being, “Damn, Girl!”

She finally told me about what happened with Orlando. She’d been keeping the details to herself, but I always knew something was up. All of a sudden she just completely stopped talking about the man and that seemed so weird to me. Whenever I’d ask her if she’d spoken to him, she would brush me off or say that they were just friends and occasionally exchanged emails.

I’d say to her, “Tell me anything, Girlfriend.”

Nakia finally confessed that there were no emails exchanged and that she cut off all communication with Orlando.

“I just want a man who knows he wants to be with me,” she said with a sigh.

“I know, huh!”

“I mean, it is so disappointing to go from believing in someone to learning that they’re no better than the rest,” Nakia cried out.

“Don’t give up, Girl. I know I’ve been hard on men, but I also remember how happy I was for you being with Orlando. Shoot, I thought I was responsible for getting you two together.”

“Thanks, Ina. I guess it’ll just go down as another important lesson in my life.”

Nakia was so sad during that conversation. It seemed like every day, from that point on, she’d been that way. I almost want to choke her because of the way she’s changed. Then I remember that she’s gone through two disappointing relationships back-to-back. First, with her baby’s father, Terence, and now with Orlando. All I can do as a friend is keep reminding her not to give up, especially on herself.

I told her, “Girl, that special man is gonna walk into your life when you least expect it.”

“Yeah, I know and look what happened.” One could easily see the disappointment written all over her face.

All I could do was look at her and shrug my shoulders. I’m gonna pray that God brings a good man in her life ‘cause I’d hate to see her succumb even further into her newfound bitterness—though I can definitely understand where it comes from.

Well, I can’t say that I’ve been faring much better in my pursuit of a good man. Actually I haven’t been pursuing anyone, but I did happen upon a man recently at work. His name is kind of funny to me for a black man. Or maybe I’m in denial about being ignorant.

I asked this brotha, “What’s your name again?”

“Sebastian,” he responded.

“You black?”

He just started laughing as though I caught him off guard with my somewhat silly question.

“Yes, I am, why?” he asked.

“Just teasing you…”

I came off as slightly rude that day, but he didn’t seem to notice too much.
